Seminar on BIPV in Lagos (Nigeria)

The Seminar on Building Integrated Photovoltaics held for the first time in Nigeria was a huge success and we appreciate all participants both onsite and online for that! The energy in the room was 100% right from the beginning to the end, with both physical and virtual participants making very vital contributions to the program.

The first session anchored by Engr. Adedayo Afolabi (MNSE, COREN, CEM) of Niteo Ltd was not just educative but also inspiring. According to him, while challenges are a part of life, the secret of progress is to understand how to spot and take advantage of the opportunity inherent in challenges. Nigeria has power challenges which solar solutions can tackle effectively because of the sheer amount of sunlight available everyday. With climate change being a growing source of concern, the increasing use of solar solutions, particularly BIPV, will help Nigeria positively reduce its carbon footprint and avert environmental disaster.

Then there was the presentation by Kevin Noukam Tiangueu, M. Eng. of Greenglass Africa where he made a case for transforming every building into a power generating set so that “each building or structure essentially powers itself." He noted that the real advantage of the BIPV is that it can be customized based on the customer's application, specifications and available space. His vivid description of the characteristics of the BIPV application in real life projects with relevant case studies plus its fire resistant capacities awed the audience who decided to consider the systems for their ongoing projects.

Igor Mbakom Tchiengang, provided crucial information on the immense potential and suitability of the BIPV as a solution for Africa by replacing aspects of building materials  such as transparent curtain walls while still generating electricity. On the product lifespan, he noted that BIPV has a lifespan of 25 years before the commencement of degradation. He concluded by describing how the partnership with Niteo Ltd will ensure Nigerian customers receive of the range after-sales support and service after installation.
